Buying Supplements in Ireland

What to look for on the label, what Irish and EU rules allow a supplement to claim, and how to choose a product that genuinely fits your routine.

Start with the label, not the promise

Every food supplement sold in Ireland must carry a full ingredient list, the amount of each nutrient per daily serving, allergen information, a recommended dose and the name of the responsible food business operator. That back panel tells you far more than the front of the pack.

Compare the amount per recommended daily serving, the chemical or botanical form, and any other active ingredients. A higher number is not automatically better — the right dose depends on your diet, your health history and what you actually want to achieve.

What claims are allowed in Ireland

Ireland follows EU rules on nutrition and health claims. Only authorised claims may appear on a label — for example, vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system, and magnesium contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.

A supplement cannot legally be presented as preventing, treating or curing disease. If a product page or advertisement suggests otherwise, treat it as a warning sign about the seller rather than a reason to buy.

Forms, doses and the details that matter

The same nutrient can appear in very different forms — magnesium glycinate and magnesium oxide, for instance, differ in elemental content and tolerability. Check which form a product uses, how much of the active ingredient each serving actually provides, and whether the serving size is realistic to take every day.

Quality depends on identity, appropriate dose, manufacturing controls, stability and honest labelling. Look for batch information and, where relevant, independent testing.

Fit supplements into the bigger picture

A supplement is only one part of nutrition. Review your usual food intake, fortified foods and any other supplements before adding another. Define what you expect to change and when you will reassess — if there is no clear purpose, continuing indefinitely may not make sense.

Keep a current list of every supplement and medicine you take and share it with your GP or pharmacist, particularly before surgery, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or when managing a long-term condition.
